Scientists have set a new world record for plasma pressure – the ‘key ingredient’ for producing energy from nuclear fusion – which means this clean and sustainable energy source is closer to our grasp than ever before. While this is a great step forward, a viable nuclear fusion reactor ready to power our homes is still a long way off.

Doctors in the UK may be on the cusp of finding a cure for HIV. A group of five universities has tentatively announced that early tests on the first of 50 patients to undergo a new treatment to try and completely cure the disease have found no virus in the man’s blood, raising hopes that the novel technique may have actually worked. It is important to stress that these are very early days, and only time will tell if it truly has been successful.
But NASA has now found evidence that tiny planet Mercury has similar geological activity beneath its surface, including shifting pieces of crust and developing fault lines.
