New Research About Moon Formation

It is commonly accepted that the moon was formed when Theia collided with the Earth.  Computer simulations of this model indicate that the Moon would be largely comprised of material from Theia.  However that is not the case.  Now new models suggest that the impact occurred to the proto-Earth, while the planet was still molten.  This model aligns more accurately with actual composition and momentum.  I find it fascinating that the Earth used to have a 5 hour day.  Jump to the 5:30 mark of the video to see an impact animation.
